Columnist Position

We're looking for columnists!

We're currently looking for people who are ambitious with the topics they write on, have a strong narrative voice and style, excellent grasp on the English language (including grammar and usage), and who is deeply passionate about the topics that they write about.

Responsibilities

Writers will be required to write 1-2 articles a month for our ALAMAK! Blog. Writers can also pitch subjective article pieces alongside objective articles, as per the ruling of the Editor-in-Chief. Other responsibilities include pitching, writing, and publishing 1-2 articles a month of c. 600-1200+ words, along with working closely with the Editor-in-Chief, and marketing manager to craft and publish pieces across ALAMAK!’s social channels, website, and newsletters.

Below you can find job descriptions for all the categories available. Please also note that we are flexible with what our writers want to report on, and will be more than happy to have you jump from category to category whenever inspiration strikes! So, don’t worry if you’re unsure of what categories you wish to write in just yet.

Art and Culture Columnist

The Malaysian art scene is rife with vibrant and overwhelming talent. And we want to shed light on this part of our culture. We want you to report on local art exhibitions, comment on the graffiti culture around KL, take us on a tour through our local museums, give us your take and insight on how older generations may view art vs us- anything, and everything. We want it all!

Music and Film Columnist

From album & movie reviews to interviews with up and coming local artists and filmmakers, we want it all. Here, you’ll cover the ins and outs of the music and film scene in Malaysia, voicing out your opinions on everything you come across. And don’t be afraid to give your most honest opinions, even if it’s bad - art will always be subjective and we won’t censor you just because we disagree.

Food Columnist

Undoubtedly, our food is what gives us, Malaysians, most pride. From local, niche pasar malams, to the hot new boba store that opened down the street, we want to hear your hot takes on everything. Shit on the new overhyped, copy&paste brunch cafe, recommend your local neighbourhood mamak stall even if it’s in a secluded area nobody is going to visit, go on a rant about overpriced nasi lemak at Pavillion for all we care. All we want is food, in whatever form it comes in!

Political Columnist

The Malaysian government has been fucked for a long while, and with the recent change in political parties, there’s bound to be even more fuck ups in both the near and far future. We want someone who is not afraid to assert their opinions, and who is deeply passionate about and familiar with the Malaysian political scene. What is the new government doing right? What are they doing wrong? What are your suggestions on improving our not-so-perfect fuck up of a country?

Sex and Relationship Columnist

We're looking for someone to answer questions anywhere from the politics of Tinder to BDSM to the ins and outs of queer sex. Give relationship advice, comment on how social media impacts modern relationships, talk about the stigma surrounding sex before marriage, LGBT relationships, interracial relationships – anything and everything related to sex and love. We will also be opening up requests & questions for this column in the future, where columnists will get the chance to answer and give real-life relationship advice to our readers.

Other Columnist

Got ideas for a different column that's not listed- whether it be environmental justice, fashion, drugs, et cetera? Let us know! The more creative, the better.

If you're interested, send over your resume and (up to 3) writing samples to alamakmagazine@gmail.com, along with a short description of who you are! Also note that this position is completely voluntary, as we're unable to pay contributors and blog columnists at the current moment.
