SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

ALAMAK! Magazine is a magazine centered around Malaysian experiences and opinions. Thus, we want our contributors to reflect that.

We will only be accepting submissions from Malaysian artists and writers, and/or people who identify with the Malaysian experience. For example, even if you are of a different nationality, if you have lived or are currently living in Malaysia, you will still be eligible to submit (bearing in mind that your work must be related to your experience in Malaysia in some way, shape or form).

We love works that experiment with the forms that they come with. Poems that are scattered across the page, stories that jump perspective every other paragraph, photos that defy the laws of nature- anything and everything, we want them all! Let your mind soar free when submitting to ALAMAK! Magazine. We want to hear your voice, the way you want to express it.
 

ALAMAK! Magazine is also looking for pieces that not only illustrates Malaysian experiences in creative and unique ways but pieces that challenge said experiences as well. We want work that pushes the boundaries and stigmas put on us by our culture; work that questions our authorities and the social norms we have cornered ourselves into. Go beyond what you think is “safe” and “conservative”- we want none of that bullshit here. Censorship? Don’t know her. Here, we want to break any and all boundaries and say FUCK YOU to the people who try to silence us.
 

However, what we will NOT tolerate are pieces that contain overtly RACIST, SEXIST, TRANSPHOBIC, HOMOPHOBIC, ABLEIST and overall just BIGOTRY content. While we aim to push boundaries and break social expectations, we also aim to do so in a respectful and open-minded way.

You may also look through our mood board to get a gist of what kind of work we’re looking for. But don’t refrain from submitting just because your art style doesn’t fit what’s in there. We are open to any and all art styles, and would love to view your submissions regardless!

Although preferred, it’s not compulsory. Our themes are mostly for inspiration purposes, so artists and writers have something to jump off when thinking of what to submit. Above anything else, we want to showcase amazing, talented work by Malaysian voices we think matter most. So, don’t worry if you have something that doesn’t relate to our current theme specifically. Just send it over, and we’ll give it a look.

Yes, we do, so long as your previous publication is okay with us republishing your work. Although we do prefer unpublished pieces, this will not affect the chances of your work being accepted or declined in the slightest.

If you’re looking to submit in multiple genres at once, please do not send more than a total of 3 pieces altogether. However, bear in mind that if you’re looking to send in a comic submission, you will not be able to submit in any other genre.
